Software we've already built installs for a small setup fee and is yours outright — code and data. Work that doesn't exist yet is custom code at an agreed price: fixed scope, paid in stages, no surprises at the end.
And some tools are worth renting — your channel manager and payment processing among them. When renting is the better answer, we'll say so.
